JAKARTA – Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Menkomdigi), Meutya Hafid, has called on public broadcasting institutions such as RRI, TVRI, and LKBN Antara to prioritize objective and enlightening content in their programming, amidst the increasing dominance of viral digital content.
Speaking at a Halalbihalal event with leaders of public media and Commission VII of the Indonesian Parliament on Wednesday (April 16, 2025), Meutya stressed the urgent need for strong public media to counter misinformation and maintain national unity.
“We need public broadcasters to deliver constructive development narratives—not just viral content that divides,” said Meutya.
📡 State Support Needed for Conventional Media
She emphasized the importance of affirmative policies, including budget support and a healthy media ecosystem, to ensure that traditional media remain competitive and credible in the digital age.
One strategic proposal is the integration of TVRI, RRI, and Antara into a unified national public communication system, which could boost operational efficiency and reach.
🔒 Age Regulation for Social Media Access
Meutya also highlighted the government’s plan to tighten social media access for minors, proposing a minimum age requirement of 16–18 years to protect children's mental development from negative digital exposure.
“We must restore a culture of quality content consumption,” she stated.
🌟 Appreciation for LPP's Role During Religious Holidays
She also praised public media for supporting government communication efforts during the 2025 Nyepi and Eid holidays, and called for greater solidarity between public broadcasters to preserve the relevance of national media.
