Washington DC, April 17, 2025 – The Republic of Indonesia and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral strategic partnerships across various sectors, including trade, investment, security, and global peace efforts.

The bilateral meeting between Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was held in Washington DC on Wednesday (April 16), where both sides emphasized deepening cooperation based on mutual interests and shared values.

Indonesia Promotes Investment Opportunities in Strategic Sectors

Minister Sugiono presented Indonesia’s investment initiatives and recent regulatory reforms aimed at creating a more investor-friendly environment. He extended an invitation to US investors to engage in Indonesia’s critical mineral sector, especially nickel, and other key areas such as energy resilience and industrial downstreaming.

“Indonesia has taken significant steps to simplify regulations and foster a conducive climate for foreign investment,” said Sugiono, as quoted by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

These investment targets align with President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita program, which prioritizes:

  • Food and energy security

  • Industrial downstream development

  • Human capital enhancement

Commitment to Regional Peace and the Palestinian Cause

The two foreign ministers also addressed regional and global issues, including the South China Sea and the humanitarian crisis in Palestine. Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia’s active role in supporting peaceful solutions and humanitarian action.

He shared that President Prabowo’s recent diplomatic visits to Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, the UAE, and Turkey highlight Indonesia’s commitment to fostering Middle East peace.

“Indonesia is ready to temporarily evacuate and treat up to 1,000 wounded Palestinians from Gaza before repatriating them,” said Sugiono.

He firmly reiterated Indonesia’s rejection of any forced permanent relocation of Gaza residents from their homeland.

Indonesia-US Delegation Discusses Reciprocal Tariff Agreements

Minister Sugiono is also part of the Indonesian delegation visiting the United States from April 16–23, 2025, led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and including Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati.

The delegation will meet with top-level US officials, including:

  • The US Trade Representative (USTR)

  • Secretary of State

  • Secretary of Commerce

  • Secretary of the Treasury

The visit aims to renegotiate reciprocal tariff agreements that were previously suspended during the administration of former President Donald Trump.
